Psychoanalysis, Science and Intuition

In his paper Dr Caper explores the “question of knowledge—how we know what we claim to know—in psychoanalysis, using knowledge in natural science not as a standard into which psychoanalysis must fit if it is to be respectable, but only as a different sort of knowledge, to which psychoanalytic knowledge (which, incidentally, is already as respectable as it needs to be) may be compared.

Using Bion’s concepts of the intersection of O and K, Dr Caper discusses the key analytic “sense” for getting to know the psychic reality. He uses some of Bion’s fundamental ideas to show how our intuition functions not merely as a product of the patient’s projective identification, but as a product of our unconscious transformation of this projection; how “memory” and “desire” affect our capacity for observation in the clinical situation.

Dr Rober Caper is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York, he has authored four books and multiple papers on psychoanalysis. He teaches and supervises in the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Spain, France, Brazil, the UK, Bulgaria and China. Dr Caper has held positions in the editorial staff of the American Psychoanalytic Association Journal, he is also a member of the Training Committee of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training at the Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Bulgaria.
